Jiayi Chen is a queer Chinese artist based in the UK. Working across performance, photography, and the body, her practice explores female lived experiences, mother-daughter relationships, erased identities and collective trauma. Drawing from the historical women’s script Nüshu, she uses gesture, fabric, body and writing as a poetic language of resistance and remembrance.

In this portrait, white ink traces Nüshu directly onto her skin.
